Greetings carbon-based lifeform,
Below; seven items I came across recently that seemed worthy of passing along.
Sift through. Click into what you like. Skip the rest.
I do the thing sometimes where I go through an animated film frame-by-frame. There’s a channel dedicated to clips of that ilk — they also scribble over the action, making it educational. I loved these two from the Lego movie.
“The world doesn’t know what it’s doing. You don’t have to take that seriously.” Ethan Hawke talks about just doing the thing and letting it all go to hell. Which rings close to what Tim Kreider wrote about recently. “[artists’] untouchable self-assurance in their own idiosyncratic instincts and judgment.”
More color in the households please! Today, there’s IKEA trying, but these scans from Habitat Catalogues are so much more lively.
This collection of booths strangely equals the nostalgia induced by old family photos. Family vacations by car, crossing borders with such booths. They would also make an amazing studio space. Josef Schulz’s Übergang photography series.
Typography out in the wild. Discovering new ones. Font pairing examples. Book, poster, cover design amazement. Finding out “what font did they use?”.
The answer for all of the above: Fonts in use.“The seriousness of play is important as a strategy for allowing images and ideas to emerge. It’s about staying in the looseness of trying different things.” William Kentridge talks about his approach to making art, while we get to watch him make said art. Speaking of art, Art21 is a great channel that recently made great short-docs about artists publicly available. Great art. Art. Art.
Cigarette packaging collection of 35 000+. From over 170 countries. Index on the left, by country, brand or producers.
Until another Friday soon,
Gergo
